The Breen surname'

The name dates from the 11th Century. It was first found in County Kilkenny (Irish: Cill Chainnigh), the former Kingdom of Osraige (Ossory), located in Southeastern Ireland in the province of Leinster. This interesting surname is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic-Irish name "O'Braion", descendant of "Braon", a byname meaning "moisture", "drop". At the present time, the name Breen is widely distributed throughout Ireland. Originally there were two septs of Breen, Mac Breens and O' Breen's.

=== Daniel Breen (1894 - 1969) === Dan Breen (Breen-1012) was an iconic figure of the Irish War of Independence, and later a Fianna Fail politician. He died in Dublin in 1969 and was buried in Donohill, near the place of his birth. His funeral was the largest seen in West Tipperary since his close friend and comrade-in-arms, Seán Treacy was buried at Kilfeacle in October, 1920. An estimated attendance of 10,000 mourners assembled in the tiny hamlet, giving ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Breen was the subject of a 2006 biography, Dan Breen and the IRA (Mercier Press) by Joe Ambrose. The Ballad of Dan Breen by Threshing Mill Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg5M7TigMHo

Hi - since I'm pretty new to One Name Studies, I was happy to find this video on YouTube from WikiTree 2022 - lots of interesting ideas about what type of info is good to research and add to our Breen page. Let me know what you think!

I would like to join the Breen Name Study please. Ellen Breen of County Kerry is my great grandmother. I'd love to figure out how she fits into the larger family of Breens, and to help out with the Breen Name Study in general.

My father's family were Breens from Co Kerry. My grandfather Jeremiah Breen, born @ 1885, emigrated to Wales @ 1913 and had 5 sons who all lived in UK. I know many of his family went to US, including New York, and would love to find out more.

I am currently working on a family tree for a friend of mine, who happens to be a Breen from Canada. Would love to know where you are at with this name study and share what I find!
